What is On-Page SEO?

On-Page SEO is the process of optimizing web pages on a websites to achieve a higher rank and attract organic traffic in Search Engine Result pages (SERP). This involves applying technique and different elements such as URL, Title and etc.

Importance of On-Page SEO

ON page SEO is a crucial aspect of Website optimization. Whenever a website is visited by a Bot or Crawler it indexes the content of the site. Bots don’t visit just a single page they follow the links across the website to index all pages. Through On-Page SEO Bots can understand website’s target keywords, which allows the information/content to appear on the Search result.

1. Title Tag optimization

The Title tag Optimization is an essential component of On-Page SEO as it helps define a specific title of a webpage, which plays a significant role in Search engine ranking and user experience.

We have to keep these points in mind while putting a title tag

  • The length of the title should not exceed 60 characters as it may get cropped or cut short by the search engines.
  • By adding power words to make them more compelling and appealing which helps increase CTR.
  • Most importantly adding primary keyword in the title if possible in the beginning.
  • Adding numerical and Brand name in title.

2. URL Optimization

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is an address of a webpage that directs a browser to a particular resource on the internet. It serves as a method to locate and retrieve a resource such as images , webpage or file. Every webpage has a unique URL.

To address a website you need a protocol to access the resource. There are two protocols HTTPS (it is secured version) and HTTP (its unsecured version). As HTTPS is more secured and prominently used.

Domain is a name addressed to a website, a text string which user type on a browser to reach a particular website. Domain name also has an impact SEO.

In the past it was essential to add a keyword in domain name, it was a ranking factor in SEO. These domains were referred to as Exact match Domain (EMD). However it is not considered and this practice is devalued by Google as a ranking factor. As a result, It’s no longer has the same impact on rankings as it once did.

• TLD Extension

TLD stands for Top Level Domain. It is appears on the last part of domain name after DOT (.) in a web address. Most commonly used TLD is .COM.

TLD”S are of four types 

I. gTLD – Generic TLD extensions

These are the most common and widely used TLD’s and are used for general purposes. Some of examples of such TLD’s are

IV. mTLD- Mix TLD extensions

These are new types of TLd’s have been introduced in recent years, they are providing more options for domain registration.

  • .blog
  • .app

• Slug

Slug is part of Url which comes after domain and redirects you to a specific page of a website. In Slug words are separated by hyphen(-) not space.

3. Meta Data Optimization

Meta data refers to information about the webpage. The process of enhancing the keywords, Meta data, description and information related to web pages to improve ranking, user experience and visibility of page is called Meta data optimization.

Although there are many aspects of Meta data optimization, but four most important types are

I. Meta Description Tag

It appears under the title tag providing a brief summary of the content of the page. Most important thing is, it should be unique and should not exceed more than 160 characters in description and must contain the primary keywords.

II. Meta Geo Tag

Meta Geo tags are used for providing geographical location of a web page.A geo code is inserted in a website for improving search engine result for location based searches. However they are now less commonly used and are of less relevance for SEO performance.

III. Meta Keyword Tag

Meta keyword provides information to crawler or bots what page is about. A they are part of page HTML code so they are not visible to the visitors unlike meta descriptions. Earlier they were of important aspects of SEO, because of unethical use or abuse of the keyword but now they are of low relevance as google does not use them as ranking parameters.

IV. Meta Robot Tag

This tag helps the google crawler or bots to understand the content of the page. It allows you to specify whether you want a particular web page to indexed or not, and what information should be display in search result.

4. Header Tag Optimization

These are HTML tags used for heading. They are also known as heading tags. They separate heading from sub heading. There are l6 type of Heading tags.

H1 tag is the biggest tag which is used on heading. It should contain primary keyword. It is an important aspect of SEO.

H2 – H6 tags are used in sub headings and can contain keywords.

5. Content Optimization

Content optimization is an important factor in on-page SEO. Make sure to write your content in such way that it includes Keywords, links, meta and title tags. This proves in ability to rank higher in Search engine pages. 7. Canonicalization Optimization

Canonicalization is a process use to prevent duplicate content issues. It is essential for a website to have a canonical URL, as this helps search engine to understand which page is the representative or authoritative one among other pages with similar content with slight variations. Proper use of canonicalization can help avoid penalties for duplicate content, consolidate link equity and enable search engines to focus on most relevant page, ultimately improving crawl efficiency.

8. Image Optimization

Image optimization is a crucial element of On-Page SEO. By Optimizing images on websites choosing the right format and sizes and resolution reduces page load time and increases user engagement as well as improves website overall performance. These improvements can contribute to higher search engine ranking as well.

Choosing appropriate file format is essential. Jpeg, PNG and SVG are commonly used. WebP format is recommended format as it does not compromise quality and offer superior compression among others, is supported by many browsers.

Avoid giving Generic file names try adding descriptive keyword while naming the image that is relevant to content.

Additionally, if possible try adding Alt Text is an element which helps visually impaired user to understand the image.

9. Internal and External link

Internal Links is a link that provides navigation by connecting one page to another page of the same website or domain. It improves the user experience as they find the related content easily thus spending more time on the site. Even search engines use these links to crawl and index the pages.

External links is a link which connects to a page of another website or domain. They enhance user experience by providing reference and resources. Linking to reputable website ensures that your site is relevant and trustworthy.

10 . Anchor Tag Optimization

Anchor tag is basic HTML element and a crucial aspect of On-Page SEO. It helps with crawling and indexing, allowing search engine understand the structure and content of your pages. Anchor tag sends signals to search engines about the context page, which can help in ranking. To monitor anchor tag performance one can use tool such as Google search console.
